When is the Best Time for Newborn Portraits? A Guide for New Parents
Welcoming a newborn into your family is one of the most precious moments of your life. As parents, we want to freeze those first days—the tiny toes, soft skin, and sweet little expressions—into memories that we can hold onto forever. That’s where newborn photography comes in, capturing the pure essence of your baby during their first few weeks. But when is the best time to schedule your newborn portraits?
The Ideal Window: 7 to 21 Days Old
Newborn photographers generally recommend scheduling your session when your baby is between 7 to 21 days old. Here’s why this timeframe is so important:
Sleepy and Posed: During the first two to three weeks, newborns tend to be very sleepy and easier to pose. This allows us to capture those adorable curled-up poses that highlight just how tiny and peaceful your baby is in those early days.
Newborn Features: Babies change rapidly! Within just a couple of weeks, your little one will start to lose some of those newborn characteristics, like the fine, fuzzy hair and that unique “newborn curl.” Capturing them during this stage preserves those fleeting details forever.
Less Fussiness: Newborns tend to be more settled during this time. They are still adjusting to their surroundings, and sessions can flow more smoothly when babies are content and comfortable.
