When is the Best Time for Newborn Portraits? A Guide for New Parents

Welcoming a newborn into your family is one of the most precious moments of your life. As parents, we want to freeze those first days—the tiny toes, soft skin, and sweet little expressions—into memories that we can hold onto forever. That’s where newborn photography comes in, capturing the pure essence of your baby during their first few weeks. But when is the best time to schedule your newborn portraits?

The Ideal Window: 7 to 21 Days Old

Newborn photographers generally recommend scheduling your session when your baby is between 7 to 21 days old. Here’s why this timeframe is so important:

Sleepy and Posed: During the first two to three weeks, newborns tend to be very sleepy and easier to pose. This allows us to capture those adorable curled-up poses that highlight just how tiny and peaceful your baby is in those early days.

Newborn Features: Babies change rapidly! Within just a couple of weeks, your little one will start to lose some of those newborn characteristics, like the fine, fuzzy hair and that unique “newborn curl.” Capturing them during this stage preserves those fleeting details forever.

Less Fussiness: Newborns tend to be more settled during this time. They are still adjusting to their surroundings, and sessions can flow more smoothly when babies are content and comfortable.

Why Plan Ahead?

You may be tempted to wait until after your baby is born to schedule a newborn session, but it’s a good idea to plan ahead. I recommend booking your session while you’re still pregnant—typically during your second or early third trimester. This way, we can ensure availability during that optimal window after your baby arrives.

What If My Baby is Older?

If you missed that 7 to 21-day window, don’t worry! Beautiful images can still be captured at any stage. Newborn photography after the two-three week mark tends to focus more on expressions, interactions, and lifestyle poses. While the baby may be more alert and less curly, these photos highlight their emerging personality and connection with their family. Whether your baby is 3 weeks old or 2 months, I can create a session that fits your unique needs.

The Best Time is Now

Remember, every baby is different, and every family’s journey is unique. Whether you’re able to schedule your session within those first two weeks or decide to capture your baby’s milestones later, what matters most is freezing these moments in time. Your newborn portraits will become treasured keepsakes, reminding you of these sweet early days for years to come.
